Starting January 1, 2010

Illinois’ New Cell Phone Rules Become Law!

No more texting while driving or using cell phones in school speed zones

Text Messaging Ban

Starting 1/1/10, text messaging while driving becomes an illegal act in the State of Illinois, punishable by fines starting at $75.00. The law (Public Act 096-0130) says;

A person may not operate a motor vehicle on a roadway while using an electronic communication device to compose, send or read an electronic message…Electronic message includes, but is not limited to electronic mail, a text message, an instant message or a command or request to access and Internet site. The only exceptions to this rule would be in an emergency situation, use by public safety officials and “a driver using an electronic communication device in hands-free or voice activate mode.”

No Cell Phones in School Zone

Public Act 096-0131 is very specific; “A person, regardless of age, may not use a wireless telephone at any time while operating a motor vehicle on a roadway in a school speed zone.” There are exceptions for a person engaged in a highway construction or maintenance, emergencies and when the phone is in voice-activated mode. This act also goes into effect on 1/1/10.

Reminder on Other Miscellaneous Cell-Phone Restrictions

Illinois has current statutes governing cell phone use for teen drivers. Additionally, Illinois is one of six states that allow municipalities to establish their own laws regarding motorists’ cellular phone usage. Chicago previously enacted hands-free legislation to make driving while using a cellular phone illegal. As employees travel throughout Illinois, they should investigate similar municipal regulations along their intended routes.

January 22, 2010. — Riverdale CUSD #100 has recently partnered with Atomic Learning, award-winning provider of online technology training and support. Through this partnership, Riverdale is able to provide teachers, with the skills they need to prepare learners to succeed in the 21st century. Our license also allows us to make this available to Riverdale students and parents from your home computer.

21st century skills are the skills that students need to succeed and compete in today’s global economy. They are not exclusive to a specific subject area and do not need to be taught outside of the existing curriculum. Instead, 21st century skills should be infused into current course materials and topics to bring more real-world context into existing curricula.

Riverdale School District is dedicated to providing students with the 21st century skills they need to be successful in a global society. The recent partnership with Atomic Learning will provide training and resources that will support Riverdale’s students as they become 21st century ready.

Do you have a difficult time finding a book to read for enjoyment? Many Riverdale High School students have this problem, and in an effort to eliminate this, the student council has donated $500 to purchase new books and Principal Jim Boyd generously matched that figure.

Riverdale High School recently implemented a “Midweek R&R” program where students and teachers are encouraged to read for the first fifteen minutes of fifth period. The teachers and administrators were brainstorming ways to promote this program and came up with this idea. The student council is receiving input from students and teachers and looking over booklists of top young adult literature in order to decide on what books to purchase. The money is going towards the purchase of a variety of stories of different genres than the ones already in the library. The head of this project, Michele Hemm, hopes that this will help encourage stu- dents to read more on their own. “Reading for pleasure is such a great way to relax and sometimes I think students forget that,” said Hemm. “Everyone is so busy with homework, jobs, friends, etc., they forget how nice it can be to read something just for fun.”

Many students are also looking forward to this. Stu- dents often complain that it’s difficult to find something to read in our school library, and hopefully this dona- tion will help solve that problem!
